WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?
Dionne Warwick Concert Review
Fortune Magazine / Fortune.com
January 30th, 2004
A review of a Dionne Warwick concert in Singapore, by our STLF Southeast Asia correspondent: "Well, last night saw Ms. Warwick in concert and what can I say? There's still enough real good sound there (and the material is so good)--and her timing and delivery and presence are all so good that as far as I am concerned, the rest doesn't matter. She's still magic and an international treasure. Best delivery of the night was "Alfie"--much better than the recording. Real slow, like molasses--had everyone on their feet, and for a Singapore audience w/ a mean age of 50, that's no mean feat! (Or feet!) (How many times have you seen two "means" and two "feet" in a sentence?).
Joined Ms. Warwick (and our U.S. Ambassador Lavin, who sat front and center at the concert and is clearly a serious Warwick fan), at the aftershow party and was able to shake Ms. Warwick's hand and thank her for entertaining four generations of our family and for bringing her tour to Singapore. What a wonderful, nice, warm woman! In response she just beamed and smiled ear to ear and thanked me. (So did her producer). What a great night! BTW: she's been performing for 40 years and to mark same, she announced, she is in the process of recording 40 of her songs in duets with other artists (all names you'd know) to be released hopefully later this year."
