"When I heard Eric he was only 16, and I remember wishing that I could have played like that at that age." - Johnny Winter
Born in Austin in 1954, bright-eyed Eric Johnson emerged on the music scene in the late 1960s with a group called Mariani. The band released a psychedelic record with a limited run of 100 copies. Today, a single copy can fetch up to $3,000 from devoted Johnson fans. At 16, Eric had already recorded mature blues licks, well before he gained world-wide recognition. And by 1974, he hitched a ride with the Electromagnets pumping out riffs with his Gibson Les Paul along the lines of Hendrix and Clapton until the group broke up three years later.
"Eric Johnson is amazing, this might sound silly, but if Jimi Hendrix had gone on to study with Howard Roberts for about eight years, you'd have have what this kid strikes me as." - Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, The Doobie Brothers
His first solo album, Seven Worlds, was cut in 1978 but wasn't released until 1998. Nearly a decade after he recorded Seven Worlds, Eric issued his highly acclaimed debut solo album, Tones, (1986) with nine tracks of blistering solo work bringing him to the attention of guitarists around the globe. His genius was fully expressed in his breakthrough album Ah Via Musicom (1990). Guitarists rejoice in the superb tune "Trademark" and his Grammy award winning instrumental "Cliffs of Dover" and get some kicks out of Eric singing on a couple of tracks including a sweetly plaintive, "Desert Rose." Alien Love Child (Live and Beyond) was released in 2001 with the tune "Rain" nominated for a 2002 Grammy as Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
"Eric has more colorful tone in his fingers than Van Gogh had on his palette." - Steve Vai
