Hail to the Kaiser Chiefs

April 9th, 2009
WHAT: Kaiser Chiefs Live
VENUE: Fort Canning Park
ATTENDANCE: 5,000
WHEN: Tuesday
BRITISH quintet Kaiser Chiefs were bristling with energy from the second they took to the stage at their first Singapore gig. Appearing at 9.30pm, they burst straight into Spanish Metal, off last year’s album Off With Their Heads. The audience was decidedly passive at first, perhaps owing to the fact that Singapore rockers Electrico had finished their opening set almost an hour earlier.
The crowd perked up as vocalist Ricky Wilson strutted and preened through radio-friendly, keyboard-heavy anthems like Every Day I Love You Less And Less (2005) and Ruby (2007.) “You know all the words,” the 31-year-old said incredulously, as a few die-hard fans in the audience sang along. Towards the end of the 80-minute set, Wilson climbed up the metal scaffolding of the stage while attempting to sing the infectious I Predict A Riot (2004). He received rapturous cheers for his efforts.
A riot it might not have been, but it must be said that the Kaiser Chiefs sure came close.
