Nana Mouskouri sang her heart out at her farewell concert in Singapore.
HER first - and possibly last concert in Singapore was a highly anticipated event. Having travelled around the World for 45 years, Nana Mouskouri gave an exhilarating gig that fans will remember for years to come. The 70-year old Greek songbird did not look a day over 50 and those trademark glasses and shoulder-length hair were exactly as remembered. Before she took the stage at the University Cultural Centre though, there was a video presentation which recapped her exciting career. Embraced from Athens to New York, she has sold more than 200 million albums. The audience also saw some of her work as Unicef Goodwill Ambassador in Kenya and Guatamala, and in the European Parliament.
Then, the legend appeared. She belted out beautiful numbers - such as White Rose, Bridge Over Troubled Water and Sibonnet - in English. French, Spanish, German and, of course Greek. It was a lovely surprise to hear her cover the songs of her friend, Kris Kristofferson, with Me and Bobby McGee. Nana was lovingly accompanied by six French musicians, of whom she quipped: "My husband is French..(But) they don't escape. They all learn to sing Greek and play Greek!"
Throughout the evening, the feisty lady sang with her whole body dancing, fingers expressing the nuances, and hands clapping. Truly, if the joy of life can be so expressed and sorrows endured in this way, we want to be Greek too.
