AMERICAN indie rockers The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (RJA) do not have a big following here yet, but they may well have one soon if their maiden gig here is any1pxg to go by.
While Singapore metalcore band A Vacant Affair warmed up the mainly teenage crowd with their half-hour set of rockers with aplomb, it was clear the fans had come for the headliners, who took to the stage at 9pm amid rapturous cheering. The Florida quintet had them eating out of their hands as they tore through tracks like Face Down and Pen & Paper.
Like a modern-day Axl Rose, frontman Ronnie Winter, 26, commanded attention with his strong vocals and confident swagger. “Do any of you know what a mosh pit is?” he screamed, sending his adoring fans into frenzied headbanging. The other members – bassist Joey Westwood, drummer Jon Wilkes and guitarist Duke Kitchens, all 23 – responded by bopping their heads right along with them.
After a rousing singalong on emo-anthem Your Guardian Angel, RJA closed the hour-long show with the aptly-named Grim Goodbye, leaving the sweat-drenched sea of teenagers hungry for more.
