The UK duo rocked the first Big Night Out!
THERE have been many songs dedicated to having fun. The Beach Boys’ Fun Fun Fun, Cyndi Lauper’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Iggy Pop’s Fun Time, all of which would have been the appropriate theme songs for LAMC Productions’ first big party gig of the year, called Big Night Out.
Undaunted by the downpour earlier in the day, around 2,500 people trooped into Fort Canning Park on Tuesday night to have fun. The talented Force Vomit and Wiley kicked off proceedings, but the fun didn’t truly start until the highlight of the night, a boppy, poppy performance by one of the UK’s most fun duos, The Ting Tings.
Their irresistible beats, contagious choruses and unflagging energy were hard to ignore. Jules De Martino, who switched easily from guitars to drums to bass to drums again, pounded the skins with such force, you worried for the cymbals. And maybe it’s just us, but there’s just some1pxg totally hot about a girl rocking out with a guitar.
Katie White, wearing a fitting T-shirt and leather tights, was in fine form, coaxing the crowd to sing along, jump along, and clap along to song after song: From the opening kerrang of We Walk, to the slashing of Shut Up And Let Me Go, to the pounding rhythms of That’s Not My Name.
Despite the short set — they’ve only got one album, after all — the show left us pooped. Even after the Ting Tings left the stage, several members of the audience still continued to party as a DJ spun tunes, reluctant to let the good vibrations slip away. As Wang Chung would have said, everybody had fun that night.
