18 September, 2019, at Gateway Theatre, Black Box
The 'An Evening With Devin Townsend' shows feature a selection of Townsend’s tracks from throughout his career, along with Q&A sessions where fans will be able to ask the Canadian musician questions about his career and new album ’Empath’.
Townsend stated on his site, “The past decade of relentless touring with DTP had been something that caught up with me in a big way, and as a result I felt I needed to step back from that world and analyze myself and make this music before stepping onto a stage again.
“The time has come however for me to take the next step in my career, and when asked about how I would like to do so, I decided the first thing I would do was a very intimate run of shows that allows me to play my music stripped back to just me and a guitar”, he added.
Pertaining to his shows, Townsend said, “The shows are at nice venues, and include a spoken word element with questions from the audience as well as aspects of my entire career represented in this one show.”
“Before I tour with a band again, I wanted to have the opportunity to play for you, and meet up with the people who not only have made my work possible, but inspire me to continue.
“In a world of computers and social media, to be stripped of all the bells and whistles is a very important step for my reintroduction to the live concert world. I truly hope you'll join me and I look forward to being the most honest I can be with you at these special shows.”
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Devin Garrett Townsend was the founder and member of metal band Strapping Young Lad from 1994 to 2007. He's got extensive credits as a solo artist and has recently released a new album, Empath, at the end of March 2019.
Over the course of Devin Townsend’s storied career, a single constant has persevered: change. As far back as Steve Vai’s Sex & Religion, which Townsend fronted, to 2001’s landmark full-length Terria to the multi-instrumentalist’s country rock outfit Casualties of Cool to his stunning album Transcendence and the recently released ‘Ocean Machine; Live at the Ancient Roman Theatre Plovdiv’. To understand why Townsend, consciously and subconsciously, favors change is to know the man and his music today.
'I sensed he was more than just a great singer but I did not realize the depth of his brilliance until he started making his own music. I believe he's an inspired musical genius.' - Steve Vai, Renowned Musician and Producer
Townsend's solo albums, a mix of hard rock, progressive metal, ambient, and new-age, have featured a varying lineup of supporting musicians. In 2002 he formed the Devin Townsend Band, a dedicated lineup which recorded and toured for two of his solo releases. In 2007, he disbanded both Strapping Young Lad and the Devin Townsend Band, taking a break from touring to spend more time with his family. After a two-year hiatus, he began recording again, and has announced the formation of the Devin Townsend Project. The project began with a series of four albums, released from 2009 to 2011, each written in a different style. Townsend continued to record and tour under the new moniker until January 2018.
'Devin is one of the most intense performers I have ever witnessed on stage... He's surely a one-of-a-kind artist.' - Mike Portnoy, Drummer and Founding Member of Dream Theater
Across all his bands and projects, Townsend has released twenty-three studio albums and three live albums. Over the years, he has always been an intense and inspiring musical pioneer. His trademark production style features a heavily multitracked wall of sound, and his vocal delivery ranges from screaming to an opera-esque singing. His musical style is rooted in metal, and his albums are written to express different aspects of his personality. Now, Townsend is fully focused on this new turn in his career and is looking forward to sharing his newest music through his latest tour, leaving a message on his website:
